MORNINGTON Peninsula residents are promoting peace in the face of international turmoil.

A candle ceremony will be held at sunset in the Seawinds Gardens this Saturday. Organiser Christine Nagorcka said attacks on America and the war on terrorism had fuelled fear and despair in the community, which should be met with celebrations of peace.

“We want to make a positive statement about living with tolerance, acceptance and diversity,” she said.

One of the peace vigil’s most important aims had already been achieved. “It’s brought people together and so many people have helped us,” she said.

An Aboriginal artist has designed a logo for the occasion. “Rondon D’Antoine has made a beautiful logo for the vigil in the Seawinds Garden,” she said.

Ms Nagorcka said September 11, the day terrorists attacked America, was the United Nations Day of International Peace for this year. The Seawinds Park ceremony would recognise the importance of life and humanity she said.

“This vigil will promote cultural diversity within our community and invite a sense of hope for our generation and the generations to corne,” she said.

It would be a non-political and non-denominational event and all churches, government and private organisations have been invited.

The ceremony will be held at 5pm. People should take candles with them. Details: www.salmac.com/peace.
